Our Solar Hot Water System

There are 3 main components which make up our system and these are described below. (For details on other system components please click here)

BBC2's Working Lunch feature - Solar heating installation in Reading

Solar Collector

Also known as a solar panel, the collector is mounted in a suitable location (usually on a roof). This collector harnesses the sun’s energy and converts it into heat (even on a cloudy day).

This 30-tube collector can deliver up to 11 kWh heat energy per day in the summer. That's 230 litres of hot water a day.

Unlike cheaper flat-plate collectors, vacuum-tube collectors are unaffected by wind or cold and consequently work better in northern European climates like ours.

Twin-coil Cylinder

The cylinder provides storage for the water heated by the Solar Collector and back-up heat provided by the boiler.

Fluid from the collector flows through the lower coil. The upper coil connected to your boiler.

Tall and thin cylinders are ideal for solar heating applications because temperature gradients within the tank (stratification) optimise efficient transfer of the sun's energy.

Solar Controller

The Solar controller is the brains of the system and this controller has the best brains in the business. It switches on the circulation pump to harvest the sun's energy at every opportunity.

There's even a solar hour counter, so that you can monitor the total time the system spends adding free heat.
