Solar water heating, also known as Solar Thermal is a very effective way to heat water for your home and can reduce your water heating bill by up to 70%. Solar panels work by collecting energy from ambient light rather than direct sunlight and can be be either roof or wall-mounted. There are two main types of solar thermal panels.
Evacuated Tubes

Evacuated tubes offer the most efficient way to convert light into heat energy. An array of tubes (usually 20 or 30 tubes) absorb any ambient light and transfer the light energy (in the form of heat) to a fluid which flows across the top of the tubes. The fluid then carries this heat to the water cylinder to provide hot water for your home.
Flat Plates

Flat Plates are a stylish and efficient way to heat water and can be installed on most houses. They are also a popular choice on extensions and new-builds as they can be installed flush with the roof tiles to provide a sleek, low-profile finish. An alternative option is a solar panel which looks like a Velux window...(see right)
